Birkenstock Orthopädie GmbH & Co. was born in Germany towards the end of the 18th century, and based its first activity on the production of orthopedic footwear, as the Germans loved long walks for a health benefit. Only after the war, the brand expand overseas but in the beginning their shoes were associated with the German people, making them the "shoes of tourists". The brand's introduction into high fashion took place in the 90s when Kate Moss wore their sandals for a shoot and popularity grew again in 2000 with actress Gwyneth Paltrow who is often paparazzi while wearing slippers.

Only in 2012, however, the brand reaches its peak when the Arizona model is spotted on the catwalks of Céline in Paris. To date, many other famous brands have created their own versions of sandals, including Giambattista Valli and Givenchy.

In 2019 Valentino collaborates with Birkenstock and two years later also designer Rick Owens joins the characters who have created a collection with the German brand, bringing it more and more often on the covers of fashion magazines.

The most famous product is certainly the Arizona with two bands and two buckles.

The actor Leonardo Di Caprio has always declared himself to be passionate about the brand and is often met on the street while wearing Arizona sandals.

Another fan of the shoe is Paul McCartney, the famous bassist of the British group The Beatles.

Actress Drew Barrymore is also being paparazzed while wearing the Arizona, that she prefers in the Habana colorway.

And even the top models of the moment prefer the Arizona. Kendall Jenner wore it at the arrival of fashion week in Milan; Cara Delevigne improvised a street shoot with her black Arizona; Gigi Hadid and Kaia Gerber wore them with socks for a to-go look in New York City.

Another model loved by celebrities is Gizeh, the classic flip-flop.

The Olsen twins are often photographed wearing Gizehs, which come in a multitude of colors, and are joined by Naomi Watts, Sienna Miller, Julianne Moore and Anne Hathaway.
